Deep tissue massage is one of Calgary Muscle And Soft Tissue Clinic’s most sought-after treatments, and for that reason, we are staffed by some of the most experienced deep tissue massage specialists in the city.
Whether it is an achy back from an uncomfortable sitting position, or thighs that are on fire after a triathlon, we can get you back onto the path to feeling great again.
Muscular strains and sports injuries are two of the main issues that are treated through a deep tissue massage. Through the use of sustained pressure, the inner layers of the muscle and other tissues are targeted with elongated strokes, and deep pushing. All of this acts to “knead” through knots that build up in muscle fibers, and assist in breaking up scar tissue that can form after injury.
Increased blood flow and a reduction in muscle inflammation may also occur as a side effect from treatment
Although the two techniques share similar patterns in treatment, deep tissue massages tend to include more pressure and are often targeted towards certain areas of the body, rather than the whole body in one session which is often the case for relaxation massage.
Deep tissue massages may be slightly more uncomfortable than their counterpart, but they should never be painful. An important factor in receiving a quality treatment is having an open line of communication between the client and therapist, so as to determine the correct amount of pressure to apply.
There are a number of benefits that are often cited from clients after undergoing treatment:
Mood and overall well-being increase
Deep tissue massage has been shown to affect levels of mood-influencing hormones such as cortisol and oxytocin in the brain, usually leaving clients with a relaxed mental state for a period of time post treatment.
Preventative measure for injury
By allowing muscles to clear lactate more efficiently, as well as reducing muscle fatigue, treatments can reduce the chance of injury occurrence, making it a popular treatment amongst athletes. Reduction in delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is another benefit from sessions.
Reduces posture issues
Poor posture is often a side effect from tightness in various muscular groups. By going through deep massage treatments, the body is, in a way, going through a small reset to “default” settings. By improving posture, our clients tend to see a reduction in pain in areas such as the lower back and neck, as poor posture is one of the leading causes of musculoskeletal pain.
There are a number of other benefits from treatment, such as general pain reduction, increased muscle capacity, and improved flexibility to name a few.
Treatments are a great idea to treat any musculoskeletal pain that you may be having, whether it is chronic, injury-caused, or short-term soreness. It is also a proactive approach to reduce issues from physical stress in the future.
